U.S. Army Ret. MSG Clyde V. Vaughan

U.S. Army Ret. MSG Clyde V. Vaughan, 76, of Fayetteville, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2018, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

He was born in “Music City USA”. Nashville, TN on March 5, 1941.  He lived all over the United States with his parents as a child; finally moving to “The Oldest City in the United States”, St. Augustine, FL.  He was drafted into the US Army at the age of 23.  Never in a million years did he have any intention of making the Army a career.  However, he decided that he liked traveling and living in different places so he hung around until he was medically discharged following a heart attack after 23 years of service.  He got his share of traveling during his career.

Along the way He met his wife, Carol Bean, a native of Denton, NC.  Together they raised six great children, Vaudi, Gary, Christopher, Patrick, Cheryl, and Pamela.

Upon retirement they decided to stay in Fayetteville and he enrolled in Campbell University to finish his Bachelors of Business Administration.  After graduation he accepted a position as Director of Veterans Affairs with Campbell University.

In 1988 the opportunity to become the first Director of Pope Air Force Base Campus of Campbell University arose.  So began a close association with the Air Force for the next 15 years until retiring in 2003.  His Masters in Business Administration allowed him the opportunity to teach Business and Economics at Campbell University.

After “RETIRING” he soon found himself working harder than he did before.  He had the honor of serving on the Cumberland County Board of Adjustments for 2 terms and the Cumberland County Fair Housing Standards Board for 1 term.  He was the State Director of Rolling Thunder for 3 years, Commander of VFW Post 670, Finance Officer for American Legion Post 32 and the American Legion Riders.  He was also a member of Retired Military Association, Disabled American Veterans Post 46, Association of the US Army, and a member of Northview Baptist Church.

One of the greatest honors he had was being a member of the Contents Committee for the North Carolina State Veterans Park that was dedicated in July of 2011.  He continued to support the Veterans Park by serving as Volunteer Coordinator for the park.  He most recently served as President of the Cumberland County Veterans Council making plans for the annual Veterans Day Parade.  He hoped that one and all will continue to support and honor all of the veterans from all of the wars.

He proudly served during the Vietnam War in the 4th Infantry Division.

Left to cherish Clyde’s memory is his wife of 40 years, Carol; daughters, Vaudi Larson, Cheryl Moss, and Pamela Heaster; sons, Gary Vaughan, Sr., Christopher Vaughan, and Patrick Vaughan; 11 grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Emma.

The family will welcome friends from 1 to 2 pm on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Northview Baptist Church.  The funeral service will begin at 2 pm in the sanctuary.  Burial will be prior to the service at 10 am at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
