U.S. Army Ret. Col. John Wesley Loffert

US Army COL (Ret) John Wesley “Wes” Loffert, 84, of Fayetteville, NC ascended to his heavenly Father on August 31, 2018. Wes will be deeply missed by his wife of 60 years, Marian “Mim” Dowler Loffert; his four children: Wesley, Janice, Milton, Rebecca, and their spouses; 12 grandchildren: Hannah, David, Marc, Daniel, Danielle, Sarah, Esther, Wesley, Stephen, Darby, Lydia, Joshua; and 2 great grandchildren: Caroline and Elizabeth.

Wes grew up on a farm near Midway, PA.  He was a graduate of Union High School, Braden’s Preparatory School, and the United States Military Academy, class of '58.  Wes proudly served for 30 years in the US Army. Highlights include: A tour in Korea with the 1st Cavalry Division; BN S-3, 2-27th Infantry “Wolf Hounds,” 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam; Battalion Commander, 2-504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division; and Deputy Commander, Phu Bai Combat Base, 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam.  He retired in 1988 after completing his duties as Director of Personnel and Community Activities serving his beloved paratroopers at Ft. Bragg.

Among his awards and decorations are the Silver Star, 3 Legion of Merits, 2 Bronze Stars (1 with “V” Device), the Purple Heart, 4 Meritorious Service Medals, 17 Air Medals, 4 Army Commendation Medals, 2 Vietnamese Crosses of Gallantry, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, and the General Staff Identification Badge.

Upon retirement from military service, he continued to serve with the chaplains at Ft. Bragg and Officers Christian Fellowship as well as to teach Sunday school classes in his community. He was a stalwart supporter of the Fort Bragg Riding Stables and a one-day Horse Trials eventing competition which ran from 1988-2003. Always committed to his family, he generously poured into his grandchildren and leaves a godly legacy to follow.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3pm on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at St. Andrews Church, 121 Lofton Dr. Fayetteville, NC. There will be a 2pm visitation at the church before the service.
