Suellen Smith Carter January 22, 1947 – January 24, 2018
Mrs. Suellen Smith Carter, 71, of Eastover was called home on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Surrounded by her loving family, she quietly and peacefully left this life and went on to be with her Savior.
Suellen was born January 22, 1947 in Fayetteville, North Carolina to the late John Bowden Smith, Sr., and Carolyn Beard Smith. She graduated from Central High School in 1965, and went on to receive a degree from Campbell College in 1969. She was a dedicated teacher with the Cumberland County Schools for 30 years, serving at both Montclair Elementary School and Sunnyside Elementary School. A member of Lebanon Baptist Church for over 60 years, Suellen served her Lord faithfully in many capacities - as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and most especially as the church organist. Her gift of music was such an integral part of worship, and the silence left by her passing will resonate throughout the Lebanon church family for many years to come.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 48 years, John Albert Carter; a daughter, Susan Carter Canady and husband Michael Canady; a son, John Adam Carter and fiance’ Kristen Walker; grandchildren John Mason Canady, Caroline Elizabeth Canady, and Mary Claire Canady; a brother, John Bowden Smith, Jr., and wife Gayle Smith; a brother, Curtis Beard Smith and wife Sarah Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family who will all miss her dearly. Suellen’s love for her family and friends was the joy of her life, and her home was always a warm and welcome gathering place.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Lebanon Baptist Church in Eastover.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., with Dr. John Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff who were involved in her care during her time at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and Village Green Rehabilitation Center. Remembrances may be made to Lebanon Baptist Church.
