Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Robert W. Hagerman, 80, of Fayetteville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 16, 2012, surrounded by his family.

He was born April 27, 1931, in Portland, Ore. He moved with his family to Gearhart, Ore., where he lived until he joined the Army. He served 22 years in the Army, from 1953 to 1975. While in the service, he received the Bronze Star Medal; Good Conduct Medal; six awards; Army of Occupation Medal with Germany clasp; National Defense Service Medal with one bronze service star; National Defense Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster; Korean Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with one silver service star; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbons with device (1960); Driver and Mechanic badge; and Sharpshooter Badge with carbine bar with rifle bar.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, aunts, uncles and a daughter.

He is survived by his wife, Agnes L. Hagerman of the home. He also is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin E. Hagerman and Cheri M. Kuhn Hagerman of Fayetteville; a grandson, Justin, and granddaughter, Marie, both of Fayetteville; a stepdaughter, Brigette Fulton of Raleigh; and many beloved friends.

He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities. As a young man back in Oregon, he served as a volunteer firefighter at Gearhart Fire Department.

Viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service and Crematory, with the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A full military honor graveside service will follow at noon Tuesday in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.
