Mary Earlene Alt, a woman whose life was touched by grace, faith, and an unwavering devotion to family, passed away peacefully at her home on May 8, 2026, with her beloved daughter Kathelyn Denman by her side. Born Mary Earlene Steinkamp on October 14, 1936, in Evansville, Indiana, she grew into a pillar of strength and warmth, embodying the spirit of compassion and kindness that defined her every day.
A proud graduate of Indiana University, Mary’s path intertwined with that of her cherished husband, Richard Alt, whose companionship and love spanned over half a century. As a devoted military wife, Mary embraced the life of adventure that followed her husband’s service, steadfastly supporting their family through numerous postings and transitions. Her journey was one marked by resilience and dedication, hallmarked by the roles she so gracefully inhabited—as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and ever the beloved friend.
Mary’s professional life was a testament to her radiant personality and tireless work ethic. Over more than thirty years, she cultivated a successful career in jewelry sales, illuminating the halls of Carlyle & Company, Bailey’s Fine Jewelry, and concluding her illustrious career at Zale’s. In every setting, her warmth and sincerity forged connections far beyond mere transactions; she was truly a presence that brightened every room she entered.
Her heart, perhaps her most treasured jewel, lay with her family. Mary’s proudest accomplishment was the rich tapestry woven by her relationships: her daughter, Kathelyn Denman; grandchildren, Alexandra Dosker (Justin) and Kenneth Denman, III; and her great-grandchildren, Jacob and Matthew. To all who knew her, Mary was never just a relative but everyone’s mother and grandmother—embracing all with boundless love and care, a caregiver to many, and a steadfast source of comfort.
Those fortunate to cross her path knew Mary as a woman who never met a stranger, whose door and heart were always open. A woman of deep faith, she found strength and solace within her beliefs, which imbued her life with a profound sense of purpose. Her love for Notre Dame football and Indiana basketball revealed a spirited side, as did her passionate interest in reading and shopping for those she cherished.
Mary’s final days were marked by the same peace and dignity that characterized her life. The visitation will be held on May 13, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sullivan’s Highland Funeral Service in Fayetteville, NC. A funeral service will follow on May 14 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, also in Fayetteville, culminating in a burial at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Fort Bragg at noon.
Mary Earlene Alt leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and unyielding kindness. Though the sorrow of losing her is keenly felt, her memory will endure—a shining example of what it means to live a life devoted not to oneself but to the enduring ties of family and friendship.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Alt, and now rests in eternal peace, embraced by the love of those she held dearest. Her life was a testament to the beauty of selflessness and the power of heartfelt devotion, and she will forever remain in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her.
