Jane Downing

Mrs. Jane Methvin Downing, 75, of Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, after a long battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Harold Downing; four children, Cindy J. Downing, Susan D. Downing and her husband, A. Scott Greene, H. Dean Downing Jr. and his wife, Johnna S. Downing, and Thad P. Downing and his wife, Jennifer E. Downing; and 10 grandchildren, Jessica R. Downing, Thad D. Downing II, Walton T. Downing, Davis R. Downing, Ben T. Downing, Andrew T. Downing, Taylor D. Greene, Will S. Greene, Samuel P. Greene and Harrison C. Greene.

Jane earned her bachelor's degree at UNC-Chapel Hill and remained an avid Tar Heel fan. She earned her master's in counseling at Campbell University and was a licensed professional counselor. She served as dean of women at Methodist College and spent many years teaching and counseling in Cumberland County schools. Her roots were planted firmly in Southern tradition and she was a proud and tenacious wife and mother. Jane's entire adult life was devoted to helping others.

Her positive outlook and wise counsel will be missed by those who were fortunate enough to know her and treasure her friendship.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service & Crematory.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Lafayette Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice .
