Listen to Obituary

Francis J. Field, a steadfast and devoted presence in every chapter of his life, passed away on June 19, 2026, leaving behind a legacy woven with service, humor, and unwavering dedication. Born on August 13, 1958, in the vibrant heart of New York, NY, Francis’s journey traversed the many avenues of devotion—to his community, his family, and the passions that colored his days.

For 27 years, Francis proudly served as a dedicated emergency responder and lieutenant with the FDNY. His career was both a calling and a commitment, one that he fulfilled with dignity, courage, and an infectious sense of camaraderie. He often reflected that being a lieutenant with the FDNY was like “being a big fish in a little pond”—a playful yet earnest metaphor for the deep responsibility and pride he derived from his role. Through the many trials and triumphs of his career, Francis continually put others before himself, embodying the spirit of service that has been the lifeblood of New York’s bravest.

Beyond his storied tenure with the FDNY, Francis’s life was rich with the simple joys and treasured rituals that defined his character. Those who knew him best will remember afternoons spent building intricate models—cars, airplanes, and any delicate construct that demanded patience and imagination. This love for detail reflected a mind ever-curious, ever-dedicated to the quiet artistry of creation.

A true connoisseur of history, Francis was an ardent WWII history buff, always ready with a fascinating fact or a story to share. His skills were not confined to his vocational calling or his hobbies—he was also recognized as a trivial pursuit expert, quick with a quip and as sharp in memory as he was in wit. Indeed, Francis’s humor was legendary among family and friends; he took great delight in telling bad dad jokes, a hallmark of his personality that endeared him to generations.

Family was a cornerstone of Francis’s life, and the richness of his relationships was exemplified in beloved memories—especially those of always attending Boy Scout camp with his children. These moments illustrated a man for whom presence, laughter, and steadfast support were the highest measures of love. He cherished every shared adventure, leaving a trail of fond stories and gentle guidance in his wake.

Though Francis’s life has drawn to its close, the indelible mark he leaves behind—a legacy of service, boundless curiosity, and a heart generous with both laughter and love—will remain in the memories of all who had the honor of knowing him. His story is woven into the fabric of family reminiscence, campfire tales, and the proud traditions of public service to which he dedicated himself so fully.

Francis was predeceased by both of his parents, Frank and Anna Field.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 42 years, Terry; 3 children, Tad, Meaghan, and Patrick; 2 daughter-in-laws, Emily and Jennifer.

A funeral mass will be held at 2:30pm Friday, June 26, 2026 at St. Ann Catholic Church located at 357 N. Cool Spring St, Fayetteville, NC 28301.

Francis J. Field’s journey reminds us that a life well lived is not measured solely in accolades or accomplishments, but in the warmth, generosity, and profound devotion with which one walks alongside others. He will be profoundly missed, and forever remembered.
