Eloise Masters

Mrs. Eloise Masters of Fayetteville passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011. Our mother was born in Westgate, Iowa, on Feb. 27, 1926. She was the third daughter of Alma Gumm Schuldt and Werner Schuldt.

She was married for 52 years to George Norman Masters, her high school sweetheart, who preceded her in death in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her two older sisters, Phyllis Schuldt Meade and Marjorie Schuldt Blake, all of Iowa.

Mother grew up on a farm in Westgate, Iowa, where her grandparents, who were from Germany, lived on an adjoining farm. In their home, Eloise became bilingual at a early age. At the age of 4, she began her education in a one-room schoolhouse. During her eighth year of school, she became a full-time student at the Lutheran Parochial School in preparation for confirmation into the Lutheran Church. Because of the shortage of nurses during World War II, the entry age was waived and mother entered nursing training at St. Lucas Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Fairbault, Minn., at the age of 17, graduating as a registered nurse at the age of 20 in 1946. She had a a long career in nursing and was the founder and director of Highland House of Fayetteville Inc. nursing facility.

Upon mother's graduation from nursing school, she married George Masters on Jan. 17, 1946, and they moved to Fayetteville in 1947, where George was assigned to Fort Bragg. They lived in Fayetteville for 45 years and after retiring began a new life on a pine tree farm in Bladen County.

Our parents were children of the Great Depression and true members of the greatest generation who worked hard, lived frugally and willingly did without. All of these characteristics contributed to their family's well-being and are a legacy which is still being passed on to the next generations.

Eloise is survived by her daughters, Allyson Brenda Masters Wherren (Donald) of Fayetteville and Brenda Allyson Masters Goodman (Francis) of Salisbury; four grandchildren, Michael Masters Wherren (Marta), Dr. Mary Allyson Wherren Emerson (Gary), Benjamin Francis Goodman (Kelly) and Nicholas Ward Goodman (Jessica); and 10 great-grandchildren, Eloise Masters Wherren, Banks Deaton Wherren and Davis George Wherren (expected birthdate October 2011), MaryAnna Allyson Emerson, Wyatt Wherren Emerson, Hale Hamilton Emerson, Forde Franklin Emerson, Samuel Francis Goodman, Anna Kathryn Goodman and Mary Masters Goodman.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, in First Presbyterian Church, 102 Ann St., Fayetteville. A reception and visitation with the family will be held immediately following the memorial service in the church parlor.
