Listen to Obituary

David Adair Martin, affectionately known as "Bear," was born on February 8, 1939, in Bassett, Virginia. He passed away peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on August 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, humor, and unwavering patriotism.

David was well known for his warm greeting of "Hello Darlin'," which he shared with everyone he met, along with his generous habit of handing out lucky two-dollar bills. A man with a tender heart, he was adored by his family and friends, known for his kind spirit and generous nature. David’s great sense of humor brightened the lives of those around him and brought joy to even the simplest moments.

David began his military career by serving in the United States Navy for six years as a submariner before proudly joining the United States Army in 1962. His distinguished service included a tenure with the 82nd Airborne Division, 187th Battle Group and 2nd/325/173rd Airborne Brigade, Combat Battalion 1/503rd-Okinawa/Vietnam/Special Forces Training Group, E Company 1st/7th, 5th Special Forces Group-Mike Force (B55) in Vietnam, 1st Special Forces Group in Okinawa and Special Warfare Center at Ft. Bragg. He served bravely and received several Purple Hearts during his military service. David wore his Green Beret with pride and retired in 1988 at the rank of Sergeant Major. His military service was one of his proudest accomplishments and a testament to his dedication to his country.

Beyond his military career, David had various interests that enriched his life. He loved to listen to music, indulged in beekeeping, and stayed informed with the news, often with a special affinity for Fox News—something that his friends would understand. He had a deep love for animals and leaves behind his beloved dog, Georgie.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Irene Martin; his cherished daughters, Stephanie Wiley (Ray) and Sandra Bumgarner (Carey); and his grandchildren, Chrissy Larkin (Pierce), Cooper Bumgarner, and Amy Bumgarner. David also held a special place in his heart for his step-grandchildren, Matthew Wiley (Kelly) and Savanna Gomez, along with his great-grandson, Shepherd Larkin, and several step-great-grandchildren, nieces, and a nephew.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Linwood Downey Martin and Alene Larson, as well as his brothers, Dwight and Douglas Martin. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the honor of knowing him. His spirit will live on through the many memories created, and his legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who were touched by his generous heart.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 2pm at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service & Crematory. The family will receive friends prior from 12-2pm in the chapel. A private burial will be held at a later date at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seven Lakes Baptist Church at P.O Box 833, West End, NC 27376 per Bear's previous request.
