Betty Probst, a spirited and beloved matriarch, passed away on December 20, 2025, at the age of 101. Born on October 17, 1924, in Milton, PA, Betty lived a life marked by a fierce and energetic zest for life. Betty is survived by her daughter, Debbie Hager (Wayne), her stepson John Baldwin (Maria), her grandchildren, Gary Probst (Kelly), Josh Hager (Erin), and Sarah Kaufman (Kevin), and her great-grandchildren, Sadie Probst and Sydney Kaufman. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bob Probst, and her son, Bobby Probst.
In her youth, while Bob served in World War II, Betty demonstrated her resilience by taking a job at the Chef Boyardee factory in her hometown. She fondly recalled her time spent in the company of Hector Boyardee himself during employee lunches. Later in life, during the 1970s, she became well known at her local Tasty Freeze restaurant, where her engaging personality and warm spirit endeared her to customers. She was the proud wife of Bob Probst, a D-Day paratrooper, with whom she shared 68 years of marriage until his passing.
Betty's independent and lively nature earned her the affectionate nickname "Speedy" from her daughter, Debbie Hager, as she was always on the go. She loved playing all sorts of games with her wide circle of friends, such as card games, board games, and bingo. Betty was a prolific crocheter who crocheted many beautiful blankets over the years. She taught the skill of crochet to both her daughter and granddaughter.
Beyond her personal interests, Betty was a beloved and cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She played an active role in her grandchildren's lives, sharing countless cherished memories with Gary, Josh, and Sarah. Betty was also blessed with the love of two great-granddaughters, Sadie and Sydney, who brought immense joy to her life.
Betty had many ties to her community, especially at her long-time church, St. Matthews. She enjoyed volunteering at St. Matthew's thrift store for many years, and was a proud member of The Night Owls, a church group dedicated to service. Her time with The Night Owls bestowed her with a love of owls.
Betty’s feisty and spunky personality left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to have known her. Her light shined brightly everywhere she went. Laughter was Betty’s constant companion.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Betty's life at St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, NC. Visitation will be held on December 27, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM, the service will then conclude with a burial at Cumberland Memorial Gardens at 2:00 PM.
Betty Probst will be remembered not only for her lively spirit but also as a loving wife, attentive mother, adoring grandmother, and a cherished friend. Her beautiful soul and spirit will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Matthew's United Methodist Church or the Salvation Army to honor Betty's wishes.
