It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gene Willis who departed this life peacefully at UNC Hospitals on June 27, 2025, at age 81, surrounded by his family. Born April 25, 1944, to the late Frances Ray and William Arthur Willis. His family lived in St. Paul’s until moving to Fayetteville when he was around two years old. He was the youngest of 5 brothers, Ray, Robert, Calvin, and John, all who preceded him in death. He worked on the family farm growing tobacco. This is no doubt where he learned his work ethic and devotion to family.
Gene was the epitome of humility, strength, and compassion. He was affectionately known as Daddy or Papa to family, and Gene or Butterbean to friends. Those who knew him know that his physical stature paled in comparison to the size of his heart. He was a gentle giant with the appropriate CB handle of “87 Bigfoot”. He was a patriot. He loved country music, family gatherings, spending time with family at his place in Holden Beach, fishing, and riding on his tractor.
Gene was a dedicated family man, a devoted friend, and a respected community servant. His life’s work included 40+ years with the Cumberland County School System, 10+ years with Overnite Transportation Co., and 16 years with the North Carolina Army National Guard HHC 1/252d Armor achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Gene was a devoted husband to Mamie for 59 years and a loving father to Lisa, Amy, and Michael. He and Mamie raised their granddaughter, Heather, and their great grandson, E-3 Matthew Sanderson. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mamie, and great grandchildren, Matthew, Ashley Adams, and Ethan Ammons of the home; daughter, Amy Marlowe and husband, David; son Michael Willis and wife Tammy; grandchildren, Michael Willis Jr., Justin Willis and wife Shelby, William Marlowe, and Griffin Willis; great grandchildren, Wesley Goins, Noah Willis, Aiden Adams, Lawson Willis, and Halston Willis, and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Adams.
Like the tide against the shore, a father’s love is unwavering, strong and true, everlasting.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 6 pm at Sullivan's Highland Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5 to 6 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UNC Children’s Hospital’s Cancer programs through UNC Health Foundation’s website or to Sherwood Presbyterian Church.
