Retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 (CW3) Alvin Clayton Keller passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026, at the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, with his beloved wife, Deborah Keller, by his side. He was born on September 29, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Walter Clayton Keller and Eula Lee Floyd.
In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Curry; his brother, Bruce Miller; his daughter, Sabrina Godwin; and his granddaughter, Lauren Prewitt. Their memories remain an enduring part of his life and legacy.
Alvin believed in lifelong learning and pursued higher education throughout his career. He earned an Associate of Science degree from Troy State University in 1976, a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1982, a Master of Science degree from Kennedy-Western University in 1989, and a second Associate of Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1990.
Before entering military service, Alvin worked as a ship fitter at Norfolk Shipbuilding and Dry Dock from 1960 to 1964. He then began a distinguished 20-year career in the United States Army, serving from 1964 until his retirement in 1984 as a Chief Warrant Officer 3, Senior Aviator, and Maintenance Officer. During his service, he managed and coordinated the maintenance of AH-1G Cobra helicopters, conducted test flights, supervised maintenance operations, and served as Squadron Avionics Officer. His exemplary military service was recognized with numerous honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal (17), Army Commendation Medal (with one bronze oak leaf cluster), Good Conduct Medal (2nd award), National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal (with one bronze service star).
Following his military retirement, Alvin founded Certified Communications, Inc., which he successfully owned and operated until 1987. He continued his career as an engineer and information technology professional with SRI International, SYTEX, Inc., and Global Services Corp. In 1999, he joined the Partnership for Children of Cumberland County, where he served as Director of Information Technology before retiring in 2016 as Vice President of Information Technology.
Throughout every chapter of his life, Alvin was known for his dedication, intelligence, integrity, and perseverance. Whether serving his country, leading technical teams, or supporting his family, he approached every responsibility with professionalism and quiet determination. He treasured the life he built with Deborah, whom he lovingly described as the heart and soul of his life. He leaves behind a legacy of service, hard work, unwavering commitment, and deep love for his family.
In addition to his devoted wife, Deborah Keller, Alvin is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Blair and her spouse, James; his stepson, Randall Robinson and his spouse, Shannon; his stepdaughter, Jenna Lumtscher and her spouse, Jan; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during a visitation on Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Sullivan’s Highland Funeral Service, 610 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, North Carolina 28301.
Following the visitation, all are welcome to join the procession to Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, 8220 Bragg Boulevard, Fort Bragg, North Carolina 28310, where military honors and a brief committal service will be held in the indoor chapel at 12:00 p.m.
