Albert Stewart, Jr., MD, 90, died peacefully on August 15, 2011.  He was born and raised in Fayetteville, NC on September 23, 1920.  

He graduated from Alexander Graham High School in 1935, the same year he earned his Eagle Scout Badge.  He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1941 with a degree in biology and earned his medical degree in three years from Washington University in St. Louis, MO in 1944. He completed a one-year residency at Charlotte Memorial Hospital then was commissioned as a lieutenant in the US Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre on the island of Kusai.  Following his honorable discharge, he served as a medical officer in the Merchant Marines and then completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the Leahy Clinic in Boston, MA.

Dr. Stewart returned to Fayetteville to start his practice in 1950 but was called back into military service that same year.  He returned to Fayetteville where he partnered with Dr. Weldon Jordan to practiced medicine.

In 1951, he married Mary Inglesby DuBose of Columbia, SC.  Together, Albert and Mary raised five sons and lived most of their married life in their home, Fair Oaks, which they lovingly restored through the years.

Dr. Stewart practiced medicine for 50 years, until his retirement in 1994. He served as president of the North Carolina Society of Internal Medicine and of the Cumberland County Medical Society, and served on the boards of North Carolina Cancer Institute, Highsmith-Rainy Hospital, and East Coast Federal Savings and Loan. He was a founding board member of The Fayetteville Academy, a lifetime member of the Fayetteville Kiwanis Club, and a founding member of the St. Andrews Society of North Carolina.  He attended Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

Dr. Stewart’s devotion to medicine and to his patients continued throughout his life.  He enjoyed cabinetmaking, bird hunting, history, genealogy, and, most of all, he loved his ten grandchildren.

Dr. Stewart was predeceased by his wife, Mary, in 2004 after 52 years of marriage, and also by his parents Albert Stewart, Sr. and Winnie Davis Bruton Stewart and by his sister Mary Stewart Warner of Bremerton, WA.

He is survived by his five sons:  Albert Stewart III (Bert) of Raleigh, NC; Dr. David DuBose Stewart of Fayetteville and his wife, Jane, and their children, Chip, Sarah, John, and Charles; Paul Finley Stewart and his wife, Kathy, of Columbia, SC and his children, Finley and Mary DuBose; Charles Inglesby Stewart of Charlotte, NC and his wife, Ashley, and their children, Katy and Caroline; and James Bruton Stewart and his wife, Cathy, of Houston, TX and his children, Jacob and Thomas.  He is also survived by his brother John Bruton Stewart and his wife, Pat, of Winston-Salem, NC and many nieces and nephews.  

The family wishes to express their love and gratitude to those who cared for Dr. Stewart during his later years:  his constant companion Virginia Reeves, and Diana Rotheimer, Terry Mansfield, Victoria Norris, Hazel Woodland, Eva Beaty, Evelyn Miller, and the staff at the Carolina Inn at Village Green.

There will be a private burial at Cross Creek Cemetery.   A memorial service to celebrate Dr Albert Stewart’s life will be held  Saturday, August 20, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with The Rev. Raymond F. Brown officiating.  The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
