Rev. Lawrence E. Lugar, 90, died November 10 at his home in Fayetteville, N.C.
Rev. Lugar was born in Roanoke, Virginia and a graduate of Jefferson High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II .
Following his discharge, he attended National Business College, before attending and graduating from Ferrum Junior College, now Ferrum College. He received a BA from Lynchburg College in Virginia and Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School.
Survivors include his wife, former Jean Hodges of Willis, Virginia; son Larry and wife, Sharon, Charlottesville, Va. and daughter, Estrelita Lugar of Fayetteville, one grandson, Kevin Lugar and wife, Susan of West Palm Beach, Fla., great-grandson, Brandon and great granddaughter, Natalie.
Rev. Lugar served on numerous conference committees, was a member of the Board of Directors for the Methodist Children’s home in Raleigh, NC and Treasurer of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Commission on Archives and History for eight years. He was a delegate to two World Methodist Conferences, and a member of study groups to China and Mexico with Duke Divinity School. He was a member of Volunteers in Mission to Jamaica and Mexico. He went to the Holy Land five times and traveled to numerous countries in Europe. Rev. Lugar retired in 1989 after 40 3/4 years of service, including the founding of Smith Memorial United Methodist Church in Collinsville, Va. He served numerous churches throughout the North Carolina Conference until his retirement.. After retiring to Fayetteville, N.C., he continued to serve churches as he was needed on an interim basis, a total of seven charges.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 18 at 2:00 PM at Salem United Methodist Church in Eastover, NC.
